Douglas knew, Lincoln was as much a white supremacist as others, but he was a genius politician, and the moves he made were self serving and political. Black Americans were mistreated up North after the Civil War almost as bad as in the South. Lynchings were not as prevalent in the North, but they still happened.

Lincoln slaughtered and mistreated Native Americans during the Civil War, and his generals continued it after the war so he was no Civil Rights leader. We should all realize the American foundation was wicked from the start. Close to half of white Americans who mostly vote Republican, still cling to their poisonous hatred of those they consider others. Black Americans, independent women, LGBTQ, other races, immigrants, etc.

People should also keep in mind that Frederick Douglas, as brilliant as he was, was still a black man living in a white terrorist nation. Had he said what he truly thought about the plight of his people and civil rights with regard to the slain president, it is likely he would have been lynched.
