In the North where black people had only slightly more rights than the South in a few local areas of some states, many of those states started adopting laws taking those rights away after the Civil War. America, not the regions was started as a white supremacist state. Grant had to fight with the racist up North to accomplish some of the things he did as president. There is no reason for black Americans to love this country, and white Americans that care about equity should not love it either. Time for something new and better. Anything else is more of the same.
