I have been around surfing for almost 50 years and I know many of the legends of the sport. I have owned five surf businesses. I know one of Sarah's sponsors. The surfing lifestyle is generally not that great for relationships with non-surfers.
There could be more to this than a simple Jonah Hill is an abusive man trying to control his girlfriend. I clearly see another side from just a quick reading of various accounts of it.
I almost always side with women on these things because men often are control freaks, and a percentage of men do abuse women by control, but I am not 100% on this one.
Calling Sarah a professional surfer is also a stretch. She is nowhere near the top of female surfers. I can assure you that is true. Not a small amount of her notoriety came from dating the Hollywood guy so she has benefited financially from that relationship as well.
She is an intelligent and talented woman from what I have read, but top surfer she is not. She is not a top Bikini Model either. These types of sponsorships in surfing are not hard to come by and rarely make big money. I was sponsored by surfboard lines most of my youth and it never amounted to much. She will end up being a lawyer or something and be fine.
I cannot say I disagree with many points in your article, but I am torn on this chicken shit drama out of Hollywood. It has been good promotional material for both of them and I tend to be cynical when it comes to public figures.
