Great question!

America was built on white supremacy and remains a racist country to this day. Even with platitudes some make about being more accepting of other races, cultures, or sexual orientation. Boiling beneath with over half the country and within our government is the same poison racism that was there in 1760, 1860, and 1960.

The Confederate side was just one side of American white supremacy. It did not go away in the North, South, East or Western parts of the United States after the Civil War. Most of the Klan headquarters these days are in places like Indiana, New Jersey, and Ohio. The great union army both during and after the Civil War did genocide to native Americans, and did not help freed slaves for another hundred years.

It will be a continued long fight to get a country founded on white supremacy to give it up. Being the favored caste is hard to let go. Germany only gave it up when the entire world defeated them, occupied them, and forced it. Nice article.
