Archie's character was not a hater, and he later considered himself black and stood up the Klan because he had received a transfusion from a black American. His character was more ignorant than mean and the show had great writing. As the show went on Archie's character started seeing the errors in his thinking.
The Jeffersons was a great show also. At the end of the day those of us who are on the side of the vulnerable are going to need allies, and being so pure and holy you must hate the slightest misstep without considering the person's humanity will not work. It reminds me too much of church.
Bigotry needs to be challenged, but these old shows had a great moral compass. My favorite episode of the Jeffersons was "Otis." Great writing.
